This is a treat for any fight fan who grew up when the only source for women's wrestling was the Saturday night matches from Marigold Arena in Chicago. Today's pro matches are scripted from beginning to end. But ask any old time gal grappler and she'll tell you that, even though the winner was pre determined, promoters didn't much care how the women arrived at the conclusion. And given that the designated loser wasn't always happy with her role, most matches were more or less real in the action leading up to the climax. There were some pretty serious whippings handed out in those days. Here we have some of the all time greats, captured from old television shows. Names like June Byers, Mae Weston, Elvira Snodgrass, Mars Bennett, Mae Young, Nell Stewart and Cora Combs, just to name a few. You may even be surprised to learn that these women would occasionally face sit their opponents.
